Grade 4 students from Mansfield Primary School (MPS) recently visited Mansfield Shire Council for an excursion as part of their unit of work on local government.

Students were given a tour of Council offices and chamber and had the opportunity to ask questions of Mayor Cr James Tehan and Chief Executive Officer Kirsten Alexander.

Questions included: What services does this local government provide? Who are the current Councillors and how are they chosen? And what area does this local government cover?

Mayor Cr James Tehan said the excursion provided students with an overview of how local government works and gave Council the opportunity to connect with young members of our community in a proactive and meaningful capacity.

“The visit from MPS was a great way for the students to see firsthand who we are and what we do here at Council,” he said.

“It also gave us the opportunity to improve community connectedness as a Council that highly values empowering our community members to be involved with their local government.”

“And what better way to encourage that than with the next generation.”
