Pilot antenatal classes receive positive response from community

A new pilot program delivering free antenatal classes was successfully launched in Mansfield, providing local families with valuable support from pregnancy through to early parenthood.
The initiative brings together Mansfield District Hospital, Central General Practice, Mansfield Dads Group and Council in a partnership that supports growing families.
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie believes any initiative which provides extra services within Mansfield Shire is a positive outcome for the community.
“Our shire is growing and any extra service we provide our residents that improves our self-reliance is a commonsense investment,” he said.
“Where you have growth, you have babies and new parents. Being a new parent’s an exciting time but it can be overwhelming – there’s a lot to learn.”
“Being able to help Mansfield Shire’s growing families, giving them the skills and experience they need to feel confident raising the next generation of Mansfield Shire residents, is an excellent outcome.”
Nine attendees seeking the tools to get them through their early parenting journey participated in the initial session. The success of the event highlighted the strength of organisations working collaboratively to deliver better outcomes for the community.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many valuing both the information shared and the opportunity to build local connections.
The classes provided practical guidance on pregnancy, labour and birth, infant feeding and emotional wellbeing, while also creating space for parents to ask questions, build confidence and connect with others on a similar journey.
“Previously, Mansfield parents needed to travel outside the district to access antenatal education,” Mayor Cr Rabie said.
“The introduction of local classes remove a barrier for new parents and reflect Council’s commitment to giving Mansfield families the best possible start.”
With the success of the pilot, there is good news on the way for the continued growth and support of local families.
