New Shared Path at Station Precinct

Council invites community feedback on a concept plan that has been developed for a new Shared Path at the Mansfield Station Precinct.

The proposed path will run parallel to the Great Victorian Rail Trail (GVRT) and extend along the Maroondah Highway near Mansfield's Mullum Wetlands.

The concept for the path arose from a community suggestion made during stakeholder consultation undertaken last year on Mansfield's developing Station Precinct and concerns over the increasing traffic on the Great Victorian Rail Trail through the precinct. The new parallel path near the highway is proposed to allow extra separation between cyclists, pedestrians, and horse riders, to improve the experience and safety for all users in this area.

The proposal is for a new 2.5m wide compacted gravel shared path with creek crossings. The starting point will be at the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) and the new path will re-join the existing rail trail at Withers Lane. Concept design drawings are available on Council’s Engage website, with the bold green and purple lines showing the proposed new path location.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said community safety is a high priority for this project.

“We have listened to the community feedback and the need to deliver infrastructure improvements to cater for our growing community and the increasing community use of the Rail Trail. Council has consulted with Station Precinct stakeholders including the Friends of the Great Victorian Rail Trail in reviewing the safety aspects of the trail,” he said.

“The proposed new shared path increases the total capacity of the trail and the opportunity to avoid mixed traffic, with cyclists and horse riders using the new path, and pedestrians continuing to use the existing path through this section of the rail trail.”

“We encourage and welcome community feedback on this project.”
