New Playground Coming to Goughs Bay
Published on 14 July 2025
A new toddler playground in Goughs Bay is a step closer to reality after Mansfield Shire Council endorsed a location on Lake Valley Drive following an extensive engagement process.
The project began after the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association (GBAPA) secured $20,000 in funding through Council’s Outlying Community Infrastructure Fund. This initiative was then further supported by community engagement that identified strong community desire for a playground generally.
The final site was selected by community members during a community consultation that included a site walk. The site walk was arranged after a community meeting held at the Goughs Bay Boat Club, where community members voted by majority vote to review the proposed location on Lake Valley Drive. The final site selected addresses key local priorities including child safety, natural shade and the preservation of residents' views. The decision marks the culmination of a dedicated consultation process involving the Goughs Bay community and the GBAPA.
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said Council was committed to genuine engagement with the Goughs Bay community.
"Council was very happy to support the installation of a new toddler playground at Goughs Bay. We would like to thank and congratulate the Goughs Bay community for working together to achieve the best possible outcome even when there are challenging decisions to make," said Cr Rabie.
“We know that the decision about the location of the playground was a tough decision to make. This wasn’t an easy process and we had to balance strong views. Significant consultation led to a majority agreeing to the final site among most members of the community. A large number of community members (over 230) wanted the playground and lots of people wanted to have their say – we listened carefully to each and every one of them and we are pleased to have reached a situation where the installation of the playground can move forward on a site that responds to the feedback received.
"From the initial surveys to the community meeting and the final site walk, community members have guided this process every step of the way. Their local knowledge was invaluable in finding a location that most suited the needs of the community.”
The proposed playground includes swings, rockers, a slide and a dual rider, creating a dedicated space for toddlers and young families in Goughs Bay. This new playground will provide a much-needed dedicated and safe space fostering social connection among families and promoting active, healthy play.
“Council is pleased to see that the outcome is a site which is located away from the road and is safe for children and families.
“Community members were provided with many opportunities to have their say about the location of the playground and many did, with significant and thorough communication and consideration between Council and community.
“This was a respectful engagement and we are grateful to the people who took the time to consider the best outcomes for long-term community outcomes.
“Council extends its sincere thanks to the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association and to every resident who took the time to contribute to this process.
“Council looks forward to proceeding with construction and seeing the new playground enjoyed by locals and by visiting families for many years to come.” said Cr Rabie.
