Council has established a new bore and standpipe for community use on the outskirts of Mansfield township.

Located off Lakins Road near the stock trans-shipment yards, just before the entrance to the Council Field Services depot, the new bore and standpipe are now ready for use.

Featuring a high-performance pump delivering 120litres per minute of flow, it will serve as a back up to the existing standpipe in Highett Street, Mansfield, which has been well utilised since its installation.

The main funds for the project were sourced from a State Government grant and were spent on the new standpipe that has been installed for use by the community to provide water for stock and for use on parks and gardens with peak usage expected during times of drought. The bore water is not suitable for drinking and appropriate signage has been installed.

Additional grant funds were used to purchase two replacement trailer mounted pumps. The components of the pumps were assembled locally and will assist in refilling truck water tanks and be available for assisting with drought response and emergency fire responses when needed.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said the project was a great proactive initiative for our community.

“The new bore and standpipe are a positive step in providing resilience in times of drought with the community being able to access quality water to keep stock, trees and gardens alive,” he said.

“The new trailer mounted pumps will also assist Council to respond to requests from communities and emergency management agencies.”

The location of the standpipe also provides a new concreted vehicle bay and improved the turnaround area, allowing vehicles to safely park and fill their tanks with 24-hour access. A solar light has been installed for those using the facility in low light.

The $120,000 project was funded by the Victorian Government through the Emergency Water Supply Project and was delivered on time and on budget by Council Officers.
