A safer and more efficient journey is being delivered for drivers in the Mansfield region, with Stage 1 of the Mansfield Heavy Vehicle Bypass open to traffic and nearing completion.

Travel through the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Withers Lane has been made safer with the construction of a new left-hand turning lane, and the sealing of Withers Lane and Dead Horse Lane through to the Ford Creek bridge also complete.

The upgrade will also increase productivity by providing a freight link between the two arterial roads, and bypassing the Mansfield town centre.

While the roads are open for use, line-marking, safety barriers and other finishing touches are yet to be completed. Drivers are advised to drive safely and follow signage directions when travelling in the area.

Further upgrades include new kerb and channel for the length of Withers Lane, line marking, earthworks and culvert construction to improve drainage.

Stage 2 of the Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route, along with works to the section of Ford Creek bridge to Midland Highway, are scheduled to commence in January 2023 when weather conditions will hopefully be more favourable, and ground conditions have improved.

This project is being jointly funded by the Australian Government and Mansfield Shire Council.

The Australian Government has invested $1.95 million through its Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP), while Council has budgeted $2.6 million for both Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said that he is excited to see Stage 1 complete.

“This major capital works project will significantly enhance our road network and improve traffic flow, increase road safety, improve access to street parking, and reduce noise in residential areas,” he said.

“The main contractor, North East Civil Construction, has delivered a high-quality surface improving and strengthening the roads that can now accommodate heavy vehicles diverting them from the residential and business district of Mansfield.

“I’d like to thank the community for their patience during the construction period.”
