Stage 2 of the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route (HVAR) has commenced construction this week with site survey and preliminary site establishment works currently in progress.

Construction will commence on Greenvale Lane between Mt Buller Road and Reardon Lane. It will then move to Mt Battery Road, between Mansfield-Whitfield Road and Greenvale Lane, in the following weeks. Drivers are advised to avoid these areas where possible as there will be traffic interruptions during the construction period.

Further works will take place on Dead Horse Lane between Midland Highway and Mansfield-Whitfield Road later in the year. Works include modifications of intersections, road widening, improvement of the road surface and roadside drainage to deal with the projected increase in heavy vehicle traffic.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said these works will provide significant benefits to the community and users of this route.

“The commencement of the Stage 2 earthworks brings us closer to the completion of this major capital project,” said Cr Tehan.

“The completed heavy vehicle alternative route will redirect heavy vehicles away from residential and commercial streets of Mansfield’s central business district.

“This will have ongoing benefits for the community, including improved road surfaces and intersection alignment, and enhanced road safety and traffic flow.

“Council is committed to improving infrastructure across the Shire and we look forward to seeing these works move closer to completion.”

As part of a $2.38 million contract, the tender was awarded to North East Civil Constructions, who completed the works for Stage 1. This project is part of Council’s long-term traffic and transport strategy and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Mansfield Shire Council.

Council has budgeted $2.6 million for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the project and has received $1.95 million from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
