The new year brings Stage 1 of Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route (HVAR) to completion providing a safer and more efficient journey for all drivers passing through Mansfield.

Travel through the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Withers Lane has been upgraded with the construction of a new left-hand turning lane, and the sealing of Withers Lane and Dead Horse Lane through to the Ford Creek bridge is also complete.

Although Dead Horse Lane between Fords Creek Bridge and Midland Highway will remain currently unsealed, Council will undertake further improvements to the road surface and access as the Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route Stage 2 construction commences.

There will be minor works completed in the coming weeks and drivers are advised to travel safely and follow signage directions when passing through the area.

Stage 2 of the Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route is anticipated to start late February or early March following delays including the challenging weather conditions throughout last year.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said that getting this project right is a top priority and Council understands the need for improved traffic safety when it comes to Mansfield’s local roads, and is committed to delivering the best outcomes possible for road users.

“This upgrade offers a freight link between the two Regional Roads Victoria arterial roads, bypassing the Mansfield town centre, which will enhance the road network, and increase road safety.

“Council is pleased to see Stage 1 completed and thank the community for their patience while we undertook this major capital works project” he said.

This project is co-funded by the Australian Government and Mansfield Shire Council with works for Stage 1 and 2 being completed by North East Civil Construction Pty Ltd.

The Australian Government has invested $1.95 million through the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP), while Council has budgeted $2.6 million for both Stage 1 and Stage 2.
