Free Starting Solids Sessions Supporting Local Families
Published on 29 May 2026
Local families are getting a helping hand when it comes to one of the biggest milestones in their baby's first year - starting solid foods.
Council’s Maternal and Child Health Service recently wrapped up a hugely successful round of free Starting Solids sessions, delivered through New Parent Groups and dedicated community sessions for families with babies aged 5–9 months.
Parents and carers came together to access practical, evidence-based information on introducing solid foods. The sessions covered how to introduce common allergens and how to create positive mealtime experiences. Families also got tips on managing fussy eating and supporting their overall wellbeing.
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said the program was exactly the kind of practical community support the council was proud to get behind.
"Every family deserves a strong start, and that begins right here in our local community," he said. "It's great to see so many parents and carers coming together and making the most of what's on offer. I'd encourage any family with a young baby to join the next session and see for themselves."
He added that connecting people at every stage of life was at the heart of what Council does.
"Creating the opportunity to connect with others during all the stages of life is a privilege of the work we do at Council and I'm pleased to see it happening for parents," he said.
As a bonus, every participating family received a free Starting Solids pack funded by the Department of Health. Each pack included health information, a bowl, plate, cup, cutlery and a smock - everything needed to make those first messy meals a little more manageable.
More sessions are planned for coming months, including in June:
