The Fire Danger Period officially began in Mansfield Shire on 10 November, meaning it is now time to reduce the fire risk at your property.

Mayor Cr Steve Rabie wants to see everybody take the necessary steps to keep the community fire-safe by keeping their properties fire-safe.

“Everyone has a part to play in keeping Mansfield Shire fire-safe,” he said.

“Council takes fire prevention seriously and we want our community to take the steps they need to mitigate the risk of fires spreading through the shire. Fires can be devastating, they put lives and property at risk. Inaction puts the shire at risk.”

Steps you can follow to make your property fire-safe include:

  • Keeping your grass mowed
  • Raking up dry vegetation
  • Clearing your gutters
  • Storing flammable materials away from the house
  • Storing LPG cylinders upright with the vent pipe facing away from your house
  • Preparing your bushfire plan using the resources on the CFA website

Council remains responsible for ensuring the risk of wildfire is reduced across the Shire and has the authority to inspect private land. In instances where timely works have not been completed, Council may issue a Fire Prevention Directions Notice for landowners to remediate hazards to ensure their property is fire safe.

In addition to grass and undergrowth greater than 100mm, fire hazards may also include trees and shrubs close to buildings, green-waste piles, and flammable items near buildings or on allotments within township areas.

“Please practice caution this Fire Danger Period, Mansfield Shire is home to some of the finest and most dedicated volunteers in the country and they deserve the best possible chance of safely fighting fires this summer.”

“Taking steps to keep your property fire-safe, goes a long way towards ensuring they return home to their loved ones at the end of the fire-fighting operations that keep Mansfield Shire safe.”
