Council Goes Solar

Published on 22 October 2021

This month, 84 solar panels were installed on the roof of Mansfield Shire Council’s office on Highett Street.

Since installation, daily energy consumption at the office has reduced by at least 40 percent. Council’s investment in the system was $20,000. In addition to energy saving during the week, excess electricity is returned to the grid on weekends which provides an additional avenue for financial return.

The solar project is one of many outlined in Council’s Environmental Strategy 2019-2023. Sustainable buildings were identified as a priority for the community when we asked for feedback on the draft Climate Action Change Plan.

Mayor Cr Mark Holcombe said Council was committed to reducing its environmental footprint.

“Every time we ask the community to tell us what is important, environment and sustainability are identified as a key priority. We’re listening. We know our community is passionate about our capacity to protect and enhance our environment and this program is one of the ways we are taking action,” said Cr Holcombe.

“The shire office is just the beginning. This is part of a broader program of works that have benefits to the environment while reducing our operating cost.”
