Construction Begins on New Highton Lane Roundabout
Published on 10 October 2025
A new roundabout at the intersection of Highton Lane, Monkey Gully Road and Rifle Butts Road is under construction.
Council’s contractor, Alpine Civil, has already begun site setup and minor works with major construction activities set to start next week, weather permitting. The project will replace the current double staggered T-intersection with a modern roundabout, addressing long-held concerns about traffic flow and safety.
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said the roundabout would address the community’s expectations about how traffic should flow at this key junction.
"Breaking ground on this project is a significant milestone for the community,” said Cr Rabie.
“This project is a perfect example of how we work with our community. We listened to feedback during the design phase and we acted on it, making changes to the footpath locations, drainage and signage to get a better outcome for residents,” said Cr Rabie.
"Through a wise investment of Council funds, we've secured significant funding from the Australian Government to deliver real bang for your buck for all residents and ratepayers. This is about building the safe, modern infrastructure our growing community expects."
To allow for the works, the intersection of Highton Lane, Monkey Gully Road and Rifle Butts Road will be closed to through traffic from 20 October until the end of November 2025.
A temporary slip diversion track will be in place to maintain access between the northern and southern sections of Monkey Gully Road. Access to Council’s Resource Recovery Centre will remain available via this diversion.
Alternative routes will be clearly signed:
- Rifle Butts Road: will be accessible via Ogilvies Road and Crosby Lane.
- Monkey Gully Road (north-west leg): will be accessible via Merinda Way (a diversion track will be available at the work site).
- Highton Lane: traffic will not have through access and must use the alternative routes.
Motorists should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional travel time. For the safety of workers and all road users, please observe all signage and follow traffic management instructions.
"We know that road closures and detours are inconvenient so we want to thank everyone in advance for their patience as we get this work done. There will be some short-term inconvenience, but the long-term benefit of a safer, more efficient intersection will be worth it for our community for many years to come,” said Cr Rabie.
The roundabout is part of the $12.3 million IMPACT Route project, jointly funded by the Australian Government contributing $9.9 million through the Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program and Mansfield Shire Council contributing $2.4 million.
