Council Leases Fertiliser Shed to Historical Society

Published on 08 December 2023

Mansfield Shire Council has approved a 10-year lease of the Fertiliser Shed within the Station Precinct to the Mansfield Historical Society.

The lease, commencing this month, is based on a “peppercorn” annual payment of $1 per annum, plus outgoings, in recognition of the Mansfield Historical Society’s active volunteer membership, societal contribution and the tourism and economic benefits provided through their current and future operations at the Station Precinct.

To meet their storage needs for the Settler Collection, the Society proposed a restoration project for the old Fertiliser Shed, initially recommended for removal. The use of the existing Shed will enable the transfer of historical items from the historic Goods Shed and will support the operations of the Mansfield Heritage Museum once constructed.

Community feedback during the Station Precinct Master Plan update supported the proposal for the shed's retention, aligning with community support for the preservation of local heritage and other initiatives included in the Master Plan to support the growing community use of the precinct.

Mayor Cr Steve Rabie expressed his support for the agreement.

"This is a win-win for Mansfield Shire,” he said.

“It supports the Mansfield Historical Society's mission and emphasises Council's commitment to preserving our rich history.”

Founded in 1983, Mansfield Historical Society is a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of Mansfield and its surroundings.

Initially housed in the former Ailsa Street library building (Mechanics Institute), the Society later moved to the Mansfield Railway Station, and currently occupies the Railway Station Building, three adjoining railway carriages adjacent to the old station platform, and the historic Goods Shed.

Mayor Cr Rabie added, "This agreement will maximise the use of the new Mansfield Heritage Museum, providing more exhibition space and opening up the historic Goods Shed for other potential uses."

Mansfield Historical Society will take on responsibilities for pest control, repairs, and ordinary wear and tear. The proposed lease was publicly notified to the community in the Mansfield Courier and on Council’s website; with no submissions received.
