Mansfield Shire Council recently hosted a Key Worker Housing workshop, setting in motion local action to increase the supply of affordable key worker housing.

Mansfield Shire has not escaped the challenge the state faces. Currently over 300 employees are provided accommodation through their employers and all businesses Council consulted with reported the lack of staff is hindering operations and growth.

Mansfield Shire is also forecast to have a population increase of 50% by 2043.

The workshop brought together representatives from local employers, legal and finance businesses, developers, relevant government agencies, and the Mansfield District Business Association (MDBA).

This collaboration resulted in the development of a unified approach and proposed actions to address the key worker housing shortage, aligning closely with community values and needs.

A key-note address was delivered by Matt Nelson, Regional Director Hume Region from Regional Development Victoria on the recently announced Victorian Government funding of $150 million available to support projects addressing key worker affordable housing provision.

Laurie Blampied from Worker HQ/Grollo Group presented on their plans for the provision of new housing at Hotham Airport and at Mt Buller to provide accommodation for ski industry workers.

The event also involved a collaborative workshop session looking at factors including land, finance and capacity, which developed a range of actions. Council will actively engage with the MDBA in progressing these initiatives.

Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said this workshop demonstrates Council’s commitment to supporting our community and planning for the future.

“This initiative builds on the strategic work already done by Council in planning and ensuring the availability of developable land was not holding back the building of homes,” he said.

“The feedback from this workshop has demonstrated the need for more local collaboration as we work together to create new opportunities for our key workers, enabling them to live close to their workplaces and be active members of our growing community.”
