Twelve of Mansfield Shire's most accomplished athletes will feature on a new Sporting Wall of Fame mural at the Mansfield Sporting Complex after Council endorsed the selections at its ordinary meeting for June.
The selection of athletes, chosen by the community through a recent Council engagement, celebrates the depth and breadth of sporting talent to come out of Mansfield Shire.
The mural will feature:
- Catherine Skinner - Sport shooting
- Will Purcell – Bull Riding
- Max Fricke – Motorcycle Speedway
- Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin – Snowboarding
- Simon Gerrans – Road Cycling
- Hayley Wilson - Skateboarding
- Domingo "Mingo" Diaz – Sport shooting
- Anton Grimus – Freestyle skiing
- Michael Walker – Wheelchair basketball
- Hayden Fletcher - BMX (Motocross)
- Sophia Hill - Equestrian event & show jumping
- Josh Fraser – AFL
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie believes the mural will be a fitting tribute to those who have put Mansfield Shire on the global sporting map.
"We are a sporting shire and we produce quality athletes in a wide variety of sports. It's fantastic to be able to celebrate the community’s strength in this area through this mural," he said.
“We had great ideas come from the community about who should be included – there were so many suggestions that represented the wealth of skill we have in this Shire. It was great to see the community engaged and voting on who should be represented on the Wall of Fame.
"This Wall of Fame will give our community and our young athletes something to look up to in the years to come. Hopefully it inspires the next generation of Mansfield Shire athletes to chase their own dreams."
With the athlete list now endorsed, Council will look to find an artist whose talents can bring the significant project to life as a suitable tribute to the sporting achievements of the 12 selected athletes.
Further updates on artist selection and the mural's progress will be shared as the project develops.
