The speed limit on Erril Street, Mansfield, will soon drop from 50km/h to 20km/h following consultation with the community and the Department of Transport.

The changes, which include a new Give Way sign on Erril Street that gives priority to traffic on Ailsa Street, follow concerns raised from local businesses and community feedback about pedestrian safety in the area, which Council gathered through its engagement.

Mayor Steve Rabie said the changes will make the street safer for everyone who uses it and support more foot traffic in the busy area.

“Council has listened to concerns from local businesses and the community about pedestrian safety on Erril Street and has taken action to address these issues,” he said.

“Lower speeds and extra traffic controls will help make the street safer for everyone, including the children crossing the road to get to the Mansfield Youth Centre. We want kids in Mansfield to be able to walk around the town and to remove any barriers between them and a healthy lifestyle.”

Local business owner Tim Skinner first raised the safety concerns and has long pushed for a lower speed limit.

“Final approval for a reduction in the speed limit on Erril Street is a brilliant result,” he said.

“It shows that persistence in advocating for meaningful change, despite setbacks, can lead to improvements that benefit the safety of the wider community.”

The changes are part of Council’s ongoing work to make streets and public spaces safer across the shire.

The speed reduction will come into effect in November.
