Youth Services

Mansfield Shire Council believes young people are not only an important part of our future, but an integral part of our now. We are guided by three key priority areas:

  • creating safe, accessible, and relevant spaces and opportunities for young people to connect with each other and other members of our local community

  • promoting happiness by furthering the skills of our young people, professionally and personally, to equip them with strong foundations for future work and life

  • empowering our young people to live healthy lives by providing access to professional services, such as counselling, career guidance, education and training

You can read more about our commitment to young people in our Youth Strategy and Action Plan 2019-2023

Mansfield Youth Ambassadors

As part of our Community Recovery Plan post bushfires and COVID-19 impacts, the Youth Community Recovery and Resilience Project has been developed to find new ways to empower young people, to be part of their own and broader community recovery and build resilience through connections.

Our plan is to create a Youth Ambassadors Group to act as the voice of Mansfield young people.

We are seeking young people aged 12-25 who are keen to be a part of a passionate, like-minded team to become an influential youth voice in Mansfield.

Want to help shape the future of young people in Mansfield?
We want your skills and ideas for youth programs, services and events!

Services provided by Mansfield Shire Council:

Mansfield Youth Centre

The Mansfield Youth Centre will be closed as a youth drop-in space until September but will continue to be the venue for Council’s targeted programs and events through Engage, FReeZA and L2P.
The Youth Centre is closed until September while a service review is undertaken to ensure Council is delivering a service that meets the highest quality standards, from on the ground work to our policies and procedures. We also do not currently have the staff numbers to meet our youth to youth worker ratio and are recruiting so that we do.

FReeZA

FReeZA is a state funded program that provides music, art and cultural events and activities for young people. Concerts, camps, art festivals and skate comps are just a few of the opportunities available for young people through FReeZA!

Engage!

Engage! is State Government funding that enables our youth team to provide a number of great programs for young people. This includes the Youth on the Move program, leadership development, enterprise, pathways to employment and education, connection to community, improved health and wellbeing, and skills development. Young people can get involved in a number of ways, keep an eye out for upcoing programs and events!

TAC L2P Program

The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is a VicRoads initiative funded by TAC that aims to assist learners under 21 years of age, who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

Young people are matched with fully licensed volunteer mentors and have access to a sponsored vehicle, which they can use to get supervised driving experience.  L2P is free for eligible young people and is funded by the Transport Accident Commission.

Whilst gaining the required driving hours with the mentor, the learner driver will also have the opportunity to access some driving lessons (funded by the program) with a professional driving instructor to further enhance their driving skills.

To join the Mansfield Shire Council L2P program, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • be between 16 and 20 years of age
  • have a current Learner's Permit
  • not have any health issues that affect safe driving
  • be unable to achieve the 120hrs without the L2P program due to challenging financial, family or personal circumstances
  • be living in the Mansfield Shire Council area

If you are interested in joining the L2P program as a learner, please contact the L2P Coordinator Amelia Turner on 0437 886 339 or email amelia.turner@mansfield.vic.gov.au

Volunteer Mentors

The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is a VicRoads initiative funded by TAC that aims to assist learners under 21 years of age, who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

Young people are matched with fully licensed volunteer mentors and have access to a sponsored vehicle, which they can use to get supervised driving experience.  L2P is free for eligible young people and is funded by the Transport Accident Commission.

Volunteer mentors are trained by Vic roads and need to complete police and licence checks and have a Working with Children’s Check as they will be working with vulnerable young people.

So, if you have 2 hours to spare each week, hold a Victorian Driver’s licence, enjoy driving and would like to work with young people to assist them in getting their 120 hours driving experience to be safety road users then this might be the position for you.

If you are interested in joining the L2P program as a volunteer mentor, please direct your enquiry to the L2P Coordinator Amelia Turner on 0437 886 339 or email amelia.turner@mansfield.vic.gov.au
