The VicHealth and Mansfield Shire Council Walk to School program has wrapped up for its sixth consecutive year. This year has seen even more students taking advantage of walking, riding or scooting to and from school for the whole month.
The program kicked off with Mansfield Shire Council engaging the RACV to deliver ‘Street Scene’, a road safety program tailored to suit local road safety needs including pedestrian safety, bicycle safety and school drop off zone safety. This was hosted at all five primary schools in the Shire.
In the school holidays there was a Safe Cycle lesson facilitated by All Terrain Cycles Mansfield. This was a huge success with many students having the opportunity to learn the necessary skills needed to ride their bikes safely to and from school, whilst having loads of fun!
Making a return to the program this year was the popular ‘Walker of the Week’ profile featuring in The Mansfield Courier for each week of Walk to School month. Sponsored by the Mansfield & District Community Bank, each walker was awarded a voucher for SportFirst Mansfield.
A new addition, and certainly a popular one, was a Healthy Breakfast at each primary school during the last week of the program. Students were delighted to have breakfast at school, digging into the fruit, yoghurt, cereals and toast. Dietitian from Mansfield District Hospital, Lucy Marks, came along to speak to children about healthy eating and to offer some creative ideas to take home. Mansfield Shire Councillors also attended each breakfast to personally congratulate students and schools on their awesome efforts.
And finally, to finish off a busy and successful month, kids and parents got creative for Decoration Day! An annual celebration of all things Walk to School, students were encouraged to decorate their shoes, scooters or bikes for the day, with some awesome prizes awarded to the most creative decorations.
Participation in Walk to School has been outstanding this year, with Council receiving great feedback from schools, parents and community members. Thanks to all those who participated in creating more healthy lifestyles for our kids!
