Walk to School in Mansfield Shire

Friday, 30 August, 2019 - 14:00

It’s time to get active with Walk to School month and walk, ride or scoot to and from school for the month of October.

Mansfield Shire Council’s Walk to School Project Officer, Kylie Peel, says “Walk to School is a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day.”

“Studies show the longer we do something healthy, the more likely that healthy habit will stick. That’s why Walk to School lasts for an entire month, rather than a single day. It’s about building healthy habits for life” explains Kylie.

Mansfield Shire Council Deputy Mayor, Paul Sladdin said “Active travel options to and from school are a great opportunity to connect and chat with your kids, plus meet up with other local families along the way”

“Mansfield Shire Council and the five primary schools in the Shire have been active participants to the Walk to School campaign for the past six years thanks to VicHealth funding”.

“I encourage all families to get involved and build healthy habits for life” Said Cr. Sladdin.

Families can get involved in Walk to School by

  • referring to the Mansfield Walk to School map for the six safe drop off/pick up points, which allow the child to walk a short distance to school. The map will be distributed to all students at the end of term three.
  • speaking with other families and organising active groups, where one or multiple parents can supervise a group of children on their walk/ride/scoot to school.
  • encouraging children catching the bus to start up walking groups that walk within the school grounds in between bus drop off and start of school.
  • participating in Decoration Day on the last day, Friday November 1st. Put your best foot forward by decorating your shoes, bikes or scooters

In partnership with All Terrain Cycles there will be a FREE Safe Cycle session to equip students with the basic skills necessary to ride safely to and from school.  This session is for primary school children and on Friday the 4th of October between 10am -12pm.  Parents must pre-register their child online at https://www.mansfield.vic.gov.au/events/walk-school-program-safe-cycle-workshop

The Mansfield Courier will profile a student each week and all participants will have the chance to get some spot prizes throughout the month, as well as benefiting from a healthy breakfast, hosted by Mansfield Shire Council, during the last week of the program and the RACV the local road safety program ‘Street Scene’ being delivered in each primary school .

The Walk to School program runs from Monday the 7th of October until Friday the 1st of November, 2019.  Each year Mansfield Shire Council receives $10,000 from Vic Health to support local initiatives and deliver the Walk to School Program.
