With confirmation from the Victorian government that local council elections will go ahead in October, any candidates planning to stand for election to Mansfield Shire Council have until 17 September to complete mandatory training.

Mansfield Mayor, Cr Marg Attley OAM encouraged people to consider putting themselves forward so there is a diversity of interests and experience to guide the Shire into the future.

“I have now served four terms as a councillor and find it a very rewarding role. This is such a wonderful community that it is a privilege to serve. Anyone who is considering putting themselves forward is welcome to get in touch if they would like to discuss the role,” Cr Attley said.

“There have been a few changes to what’s required of candidates and the first deadline for this around the Mandatory Candidate Training which must be completed by 17 September 2020,” Cr Attley said.

Under new requirements included in the Local Government Act 2020, candidates must complete the course to be eligible to nominate with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). This includes all serving or former councillors intending to nominate. The online course will take about an hour to complete and ensure candidates fully understand the role of councillor and its requirements.

“The training will be an online course, given the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

Interested people can undertake the training here: https://www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au/council-governance/candidate-training  Council can provide assistance where required.

On 8 September, the Victoria Local Governance Association will host a candidate information session from 4 - 5.30pm for Mansfield Shire. Registrations and Zoom link can be found via the VLGA website - https://www.vlga.org.au/events . You can also see VLGA’s full events calendar if you wish to attend a session at a different Council.

The VEC has a whole range of information for candidates.

“I encourage people to read the VEC resources, particularly the page on Becoming a Council Election Candidate and the candidate handbooks,” Cr Attley said.

Mansfield Shire Council’s Standing for Council page has a lot of useful information including a link to the mandatory training, information on who qualifies to be a councillor, how to nominate and the safe campaigning guidelines during COVID-19.
