Road Renaming - Jamieson

Monday, 29 January, 2018 - 09:00

Council is proposing to name a road, located at 93-95 Jamieson-Licola Road, Jamieson.

We've already received 35 naming submissions from members of the public, and these were reviewed in accordance with the Office of Geographic Names' naming rules for compliance. As a result, it was determined that the suggested name, Cinnabar Lane, best represents the area with its strong historical connection to the location.

The name Cinnabar is connected to the Jamieson Valley through the mine that opened in 1893 after the discovery of the chemical element, mercury, and its sulphide, cinnabar. Cinnabar is the only important ore of mercury which was mined further up the Jamieson River at the Quicksilver Mine.

Cinnabar is bright red in colour and was used to carve jewellery and ornaments by workers at the mine, from the 1890s to the 1930s.

Submissions of support or objection should be forwarded to Council by Friday, 23 February 2018, either via our email address at or via post to Private Bag 1000, Mansfield 3724.
