Mansfield Shire Council is proposing to name a geographic feature, in particular the walk bridge across Lake Eildon at Bonnie Doon.
The proposed name of “Glad Phillips Bridge” is named in memory and recognition of the late Glad Phillips.
Glad worked tirelessly for the community on the Bonnie Doon Hospital Axillary, Red Cross, Fire Brigade, Spring Club, Bindaree, MMUDS, Probus, Heart support, & the Mansfield Historical Society.
One of her major projects was the Rail Trail development from Bonnie Doon to Mansfield and in particular, getting support for hand rails on the Bonnie Doon Railway Bridge making it safe for walking and riding access to Bonnie Doon for the communities on the eastern side of the lake.
She worked tirelessly on this project. She canvassed Council, the Minister for Roads, Graeme Stoney MP and eventually, in 1998, Glad finally received the news she had been waiting for. The Hon. Marie Tehan, Minister for Conservation and Land Management advised that funds would be committed to “the installation of handrails to enable both local
residents and visitors to cross Lake Eildon safely and that it would also be the catalyst for expanding recreational and tourist activities in the area through the development of the Rail Trail.”
Due to Glad’s persistence, the Walk Bridge and the Great Victorian Rail Trail have now become one of the biggest tourist attractions of the area.
