Mansfield Shire Council will welcome 10 new citizens at an online Australian citizenship ceremony on 17 September as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.

The conferees from seven countries, including Canada, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Thailand, Britain and the Netherlands, will become Australian citizens as part of an online ceremony.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Australian Citizenship Day. Mayor Cr Mark Holcombe said Australian Citizenship Day was an opportunity for all Australians in their community, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on and celebrate what’s great about being Australian and the privileges and responsibilities it embodies.

“We have more people affirming their citizenship this year than ever before. We are proud of the growth in our multicultural community and through our online citizenship ceremony we celebrate our diversity,” Cr Holcombe said.

Australian Citizenship Day provides an occasion for individuals, schools, community groups and organisations to reflect on the contributions of citizens to our local communities.

Even with lockdowns across the country, it’s anticipated that more than 140 ceremonies will take place by local councils and community groups across Australia, with more than 7,000 people invited to become new citizens.

“I encourage everyone to reflect on and affirm their Australian citizenship on September 17 as we warmly welcome our newest citizens,” Cr. Holcombe said.
