Exercise Program for Over 55s Seeking Leaders

Friday, 16 October, 2020 - 12:00

Mansfield Shire Council is looking for volunteer leaders for an exercise program soon to be introduced across the Shire. Council received a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services and the program is being delivered in collaboration with Mansfield District Hospital.

If you are aged over 55 years and interested in being a leader, supporting people in the same age-group in the Weight and Strength Program (WASP), this might be for you.

Mansfield Shire CEO, Kaylene Conrick said leaders are needed in Jamieson, Mac’s Cove, Goughs Bay, Mansfield, Sawmill Settlement, Merrijig, Tolmie, Bonnie Doon and Merton.

“Volunteer leaders will be required to register with Mansfield District Hospital as volunteers and attend WASP training to deliver a safe, effective physical activity and exercise program. The volunteer leaders will be well supported by Mansfield District Hospital’s team of physiotherapists,” Ms Conrick said.

“Once underway, we particularly want to include those residents in our community who are aged 55 years or over and are isolated and / or vulnerable. The program will provide not just physical activity benefits but also social interaction,” she said.

Ms Conrick said regular exercise helps improve mental and emotional wellbeing, assists with balance and decreases the risk of falls.

“The WASP program will provide participants the opportunity to access a low cost and accessible community-based physical activity program. It will provide tailored weight-based exercise suitable for all ability levels. It will be provided in a friendly social, supported atmosphere. The program paces individual progress, improves balance, coordination and strength and has benefits such as decreasing the risk of falls, helping control diabetes, depression and chronic disease,” she said.

If you would like to be an integral part of this program and receive free training to become a leader of the Weight and Strength Program (WASP), please complete an expression of interest form.

Please contact Bianca Hurle, Council’s Age Friendly Project Coordinator on 57758563 or email for more information or to have the form sent to you.
