Following a community request and consultation by Mansfield Shire Council over seven months, the dual name of Mt Battery / Beolite has been formally adopted.

Mansfield Shire Mayor, Cr Marg Attley OAM said early mapping evidence showed that the mountain is known to the Taungurung people as Beolite, which is the name of a local Chief in Daung wurrung language.

“Once we had received the request we put the proposal to the community in November last year and then at our Council meeting in February agreed to lodge the request with the Office of Geographic Names (OGN),” Cr Attley said.

“We are pleased to advise that the name was included in the Victorian Government Gazette today,” she said.

“I would like to thank everyone who made a submission on this proposal. Of the 56 submissions received, there were 31 in support, 24 against and 1 unclear position.

Cr Attley said this level of engagement showed again how the Mansfield community values having the opportunity to be engaged on issues that affect their lives.

The new name will not be sign posted but will show up on the VICMAPs database in coming weeks.
