At its December meeting, Mansfield Shire Council resolved to name the new dual court, indoor multi-use sports stadium located at the Mansfield Secondary College in View Street, the ‘Alex Pullin Stadium’, and the turf playing fields adjacent to the stadium ‘College Park’.
Alex (Chumpy) was a well-known and highly respected member of the Mansfield community who tragically lost his life in a diving accident in July this year. An extraordinary snow sports athlete who made his mark at elite level, Alex had a positive influence not just on the students at the Mansfield Secondary College, but to the Mansfield generally. To acknowledge his contribution, Chumpy was presented with the keys to the Shire at a civic reception held in his honour in 2011 following his first of two World Championship wins in bordercross.
As a measure of respect, Council resolved to approach the Pullin family for approval to recognise Chumpy’s outstanding sporting achievements and contribution to our community by naming the new sports stadium in his honour.
“We were heartened to receive the Pullin family’s consent,” Mansfield Shire Council Mayor, Cr Mark Holcombe said.
“Council is extremely proud of this project and acknowledges the extraordinary effort and work undertaken by the community, the Department of Education and Mansfield Secondary College. The need for additional sporting facilities, aligned to our growing population in Mansfield, has been a re-occurring theme within Council’s strategic documents since 2006.
“The completion of the Alex Pullin Stadium and College Park is indeed a proud moment for Council, the community and all the stakeholders who worked so hard on this project” he said.
In accordance with legislative requirements, Council will lodge both names with Geographic Names Victoria.
