Council Meetings Can Now Be Conducted Electronically

Mansfield Shire Council’s May meeting, scheduled to be held in Tolmie, will now be conducted online and livestreamed after the Victorian parliament this week passed new measures to allow online meetings until 1 November 2020.
Victorian councils formerly had to meet in person and while recent Mansfield Shire Council meetings were being livestreamed and council officers were joining meetings virtually, councillors had to be in the same room.
This requirement during the pandemic, meant many Councils were unable to achieve a quorum which was impacting some council business.
Mansfield Mayor, Cr Marg Attley said while Council had continued to achieve a quorum, it welcomed the ability to meet online.
“We support this temporary change. Along with other councils, we had been advocating for it,” Cr Attley said.
The Municipal Association of Victoria applauded the move which means councillors can continue to serve their community without compromising their own, their colleagues’ or the community’s health and safety.
“Mansfield Shire Council is currently live streaming all council meetings and will continue to do so. In addition to this, we have created an online form for our community to submit a question to be addressed at a council meeting. This form is on our website. Questions are to be submitted by midday on the Monday before a council meeting,” Cr Attley said.
"It's important that we continue to involve our community in decisions during these restrictions. Therefore, we are moving towards more online community engagement tools for all council business, not just for council meetings," she said.
