A child’s wish-list of playground attractions is included in the final design for Mansfield Shire Council’s Botanic Park Playground redevelopment after Council approved the design at Tuesday’s Council meeting.

Mansfield Mayor, Cr Marg Attley OAM thanked the members of the playground reference group and the many people who provided input into the design through the community consultation phases.

“We’ve ended up with a delightful design that includes a rope climbing course, trampolines, sculptures, a double-cable flying fox and wheelchair accessible paths,” Cr Attley said.

“It’s very exciting for local families and visitors and once complete, is expected to be a big drawcard to our town,” she said.

“The health and wellbeing benefits of children’s outdoor play are well known; this project supports our aims of community connection and building resilience and enables our aspiration of living and playing in an inclusive community.

The project was initiated in 2010 when it was noted how well-used the playground equipment was but that it was ageing. With a 2019 safety audit finding the equipment didn’t meet safety requirements, Council allocated funds in its 2019/20 budget to make a start on the project, with a view to seeking external funding to contribute to construction. Now that the design has been approved, the next step is to develop the final tender package so that the tender process can start as soon as the budget is confirmed.  The cost to construct the playground is estimated at $670,000.

Cr Attley said Council is waiting to learn if it was successful in its application for $250,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Community Facilities Program.

“We should know next month and we can also explore other funding opportunities such as up to $300,000 through the Growing Victoria’s Botanic Gardens grants program,” she said.

While the plan includes options to scale down the design to fit the final budget, delivery of this project is dependent on some level of external funding being obtained.

It is anticipated a tender for construction will be released as soon as the final budget has been confirmed.
