Mansfield Shire Council’s Youth Centre has re-opened with a 6 month plan of activities and events for young people starting with Magic: The Gathering on 30 June.
Mansfield Shire Mayor, Cr Marg Attley OAM said after the shutdown due to COVID-19, the Youth team has developed an extensive and varied plan for the year, as well as factoring the social distancing and group size limitations.
“We have an incredible space with dedicated and enthusiastic staff at the Youth Centre, where young people can come and spend time with their friends in a safe environment, whilst also being involved in some fantastic programs. With school holidays starting next Friday, 26 June, it’s a great way for young people to connect with their friends,” Cr Attley said
“It’s a fun, friendly, safe environment for young people to share spaces and activities with other young people and get access to great programs. We have a gaming hub, pool tables, air hockey, stocked board-game cupboard and a cosy heated outdoor area where young people can rug up, sip hot chocolate, and hang out together,” she said.
Youth Services and Partnerships Coordinator, Bonnie Clark, said early in the school holidays a special guest is coming from Melbourne to host a round of Magic: The Gathering.
“This adventure card game is played all around the world, with the aim to defeat opponents and show off your skill with majestic creatures and powerful enchantments. This activity is for ages 12-25, even if you’ve never played the game before! Our facilitator will guide us through the basic rules, then challenge us to a few rounds. All cards will be provided,” Ms Clark said.
“We also have plans for movies, make your own t-shirt day and DJ classes. We encourage young people to call in and see what’s on the program as there is something for all Mansfield’s young people to be part of,” she said
“On Thursday 2 July and Tuesday 7 July, our in-house DJ will be playing and giving lessons on what it means to be a DJ! You’ll be able to practice your mixing skills, and maybe put together a set to play at one of our future events! Bring your dancing shoes because it’s going to get funky.
“‘Friday Night Lights’ is also back! Kicking off in the school holidays, Fridays are for music. Live. Acoustic. DJ. Whatever your taste. Come and hear some great local talent and have a jam yourself.”
Magic: The Gathering will be held on Tuesday 30 June, 1pm-5pm. All cards supplied.
The Youth Centre is open during the school term to 12-17 year olds, Tuesday-Friday from 3pm until 6pm and during the school holidays from 1pm-5pm.
