Local earthmoving business Alpine Civil Pty Ltd was awarded the tender to complete 2020-21 gravel roads re-sheet program by Council at its January meeting last week.
Mayor Mark Holcombe said the program, which will commence in March 2021 is part of Council’s ongoing 5 Year Capital Works Program maintaining the Shire’s unsealed road network to an adequate and fit for purpose condition.
“The Capital Works Program is reviewed annually to ensure that we are delivering on important projects identified by Council and our local community” he said.
“After a competitive and thorough tender evaluation process, Council was pleased to award the contract to local business, Alpine Civil. It’s important we do what we can to help stimulate the local economy and continue to provide jobs within the local community.” he said.
General Manager Infrastructure & Planning, Kirsten Alexander said that re-sheeting locations are prioritised and chosen based on a range of criteria, including community feedback and current condition.
“Re-sheeting and reconstruction will be carried out on the selected gravel roads across the Shire to improve safety and accessibility for all users. In addition to community feedback, we need to take a number of factors into consideration when selecting roads for inclusion, including but not limited to; traffic, effects of heavy vehicles, effectiveness of drains, clearance to vegetation and existing pavement thickness.” Ms Alexander said.
Council resolved to approve an overall budget of $1,974,591 for the re-sheet program, including State Government funding provided under the AgriLinks Upgrade Program. It is expected that works will be completed by June 2021.
