The Mansfield Active Footpath Project was launched on Tuesday 21 September with community members, Councillors and representatives from the project group in attendance.

The Active Footpath Project aims to increase incidental exercise and affordable physical activity within community spaces. It involves strategically located adhesive footpath art and signage around Mansfield that prompt passers-by to engage in physical activity.

Mansfield RESPOND, a collaborative project including Mansfield Shire Council, Mansfield District Hospital, Deakin University, community organisations and members of the community, has implemented the Mansfield Active Footpath Project.

Mansfield Shire Council was successful in applying for the VicHealth Reimagining Health Grant. This funding supports organisations to get creative in finding ways for communities to engage in physical activity where many typical avenues are disrupted by the impacts of coronavirus.

Mayor Cr Mark Holcombe said Council was proud to be part of the project.

“This project is designed to improve the lives of children and families in Mansfield Shire,” said Cr Holcombe.

“The initiative was the idea of a community member and while we are facilitating the work, it is a community-led and community-driven project that creates positive change for future generations.”

The idea came from a local visual art teacher, who had drawn exercise prompts on the footpath in chalk outside her home for the grandchildren to enjoy. Community members then spontaneously followed the exercises and the idea was raised with Council.

The semi-permanent adhesive prompts now located around town have custom exercises placed strategically along Mansfield’s walking network. QR codes are available with more information, including demonstration videos.

The stickers can be found at:
