Age Friendly Communities

An age-friendly community is one that is designed for people to stay active, engaged and healthy with dignity and enjoyment as they age.  We are seeking your input in order to understand what will make your community a great place to live, work and play as you age.  Your input will help inform an Age-Friendly Communities Project Plan specifically designed for your community and subsequent Council and organisational plans.

Mansfield Shire has a significant ageing population, constituting a higher than State average population of residents over 55 years.  In response to ensuring that the needs of ageing residents are being addressed, Mansfield Shire Council has been funded by the Department of Health and Human Services to lead the Age-Friendly Communities Project across Mansfield Shire through to June 2020.  The broad aim of the project is to create a more age-friendly Mansfield Shire; one that is purposefully designed to enable residents to remain active, engaged and healthy with dignity and enjoyment as they age.

With the aim of developing an Age-Friendly Community Plan we are seeking the input of residents in order to identify the age-friendly barriers and enablers currently existing within and across different communities of Mansfield Shire.

This questionnaire will assess Mansfield Shire’s residents’ individual and community needs and experiences in relation to eight key domains, as identified by the World Health Organisation, that form the foundations for an age-friendly community.

The eight domains to be explored within the scope of the questionnaire, are:

  •  Outdoor space and buildings
  •  Transport
  •  Housing
  •  Respect and Inclusion
  •  Social Participation
  •  Communication and Information
  •  Civic Participation and Employment
  •  Community Support and Health Services

In conjunction with the questionnaire process, there will also be a number of Age-Friendly Community Ambassadors undertaking an Age-Friendly Community Checklist.
