Mansfield Shire Council has been successful in its application for $40,000 to prepare to separate food and organic waste from landfill in partnership with Murrindindi Shire Council.

The grant funding will be used to determine the cost of processing food and organic waste and to explore options for localised processing. The work prepares for the new Victorian Government legislation that requires all Victorian councils to provide a separate food and organic waste service by 2030.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said the two councils would work together to explore options that amplify local impact.

“The funding will enable us to engage a consultant to investigate localised options for processing food and organics waste,” said Cr Tehan.

“Leading this partnership with our neighbouring shire allows us to achieve economies of scale while delivering a local solution that works for our communities. This will kickstart what we can get on the ground when the time comes that we must separate our waste.”

This project is supported by the Recycling Victoria Councils Fund. The fund is delivered by Sustainability Victorian under the Victorian Government’s circular economy plan, Recycling Victoria: a new economy.

Consultation has commenced on the changes to recycling and waste services in Mansfield Shire that will be required under the new legislation. Visit engage.mansfield.vic.gov.au to be kept abreast of how these changes will impact Mansfield Shire and to help shape how waste is handled.
