About Merton
Merton is one of the gateways to Mansfield Shire and is the first community encountered when approaching the Shire from Melbourne. The township is home to some 100 households and, like most of the shire, continues to welcome new residents who are drawn to the region by its lifestyle attributes.

Location: the foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges in north-east Victoria.

History: The area was originally occupied by the Yaran-illum people, a clan of the Taungurong people. European settlement was established around the late 1830’s, with large agricultural runs. Gold was found in the local creeks and their tributaries around the 1870’s.

Economy: Although agriculture remains the main industry within the Merton area, a wide range of small businesses in tourism and professional services sectors have been established in recent times.
